Your paces explained

Why easy runs say “No faster than”, what the ranges on harder runs mean, and how to run by feel instead.

4 steps · 2 min

  1. Easy and long runs: “No faster than”

Easy runs only have a limit: don't go faster than this pace. Slower is always fine – on hills, in heat or on a tired day, slow down as much as you need.

  2. Tempo, intervals, race pace and hills: a range

Harder parts show a range, for example 5:10–5:20/km. Aim to stay inside it. Faster isn't better – it makes the next days harder.

  3. Where the paces come from

From a recent race time if you gave one when you made the plan, otherwise from what you told Runbriel about your running. Faster now? Manage plan → Change answers, with your new race time.

  4. Prefer effort to pace?

My account → Units & pace → Workout targets → Effort (RPE, 1 to 10). Workouts then describe how it should feel instead of a pace.
